The City of Burnaby is seeking Curatorial Aides on an auxiliary basis to assist with researching and cataloguing the Chinese herbalist shop exhibit, and also cleaning exhibit and display areas at the Burnaby Village Museum. At the Chinese herbalist shop, the curatorial aide will be working with the contents of the Way Sang Yuen Wat Kee herbalist shop, a business that operated in Victoria’s Chinatown from approximately 1900 to 1971. Research would include identifying the contents of the shop, and entering that information into the Museum’s database. An ability to read Classical Chinese would be an asset for this work, but is not required. Curatorial Aides perform clerical and manual work in assisting with curatorial and collections duties and work as part of a team to conduct research and perform data entry. This position performs basic research tasks on collections, exhibits and history; cleans exhibit and display areas, packs and moves artifacts; assists to track locations and movement of objects and collects basic data for inventory purposes; performs data entry, typing and other duties of general clerical nature; and performs other related duties as required. Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses relevant to the work and some experience, preferably in a museum, public gallery or library. Successful candidates will have sound working knowledge of the handling and care required for artifacts and art objects, knowledge of cataloguing techniques used in museums; ability to physically handle artifacts; excellent oral and written communication skills; and experience using MS Office and database. Ability to work with limited supervision; to adapt to a variety of work scenarios; to exercise initiative, judgment, discretion and confidentiality; to meet deadlines; and to work under pressure as part of a team. A Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia is required. The starting wage is $24.36 per hour plus 12% in lieu of benefits. Please submit your application by Thursday, January 24, 2019.
