The Community

Situated adjacent to the City of Orillia and bounded by Lake Couchiching to the east, the Severn River to the north, Georgian Bay to the west and Bass Lake to the south, this recreational setting allows for numerous year round activities with a wide range of services. This charming Township with a permanent population of 13,477 seasonally swells to over 15,000 in the summer and encompasses 550 sq. km. It is an ideal location to live, work, and raise a family. Reporting to council through the mayor you will lead a non-union staff of 54 through a team of four department heads. The CAO oversees a total proposed 2019 budget of $13 million.

The Township Government

The Township of Severn is governed by an elected Council consisting of a Mayor, Deputy Mayor and 5 Councillors currently serving a four-year term (2018 – 2022). A new Council was elected in Severn on October 22, 2018. The current Mayor and Council for the Township of Severn are as follows:  

Mayor – Mike Burkett, Deputy Mayor Jane Dunlop.   Ward 1 – Mark Taylor,  Ward 2 – Judith Cox,  Ward 3 – John Betsworth,  Ward 4 – Ron Stevens,  Ward 5 – Sarah Valiquette-Thompson.

Our Council makes decisions affecting the community and the services provided by the Township of Severn.

The CAO Position

The successful candidate for the position will be a mature, proven people manager capable of, inspiring and developing existing and future, motivated, high performing staff at all levels. Strong leadership and customer satisfaction skills. The next CAO will lead by example, be a motivator, able to achieve high levels of service delivery excellence throughout the organization. The position requires someone with financial expertise, discipline to balance fiscal restraint with efficiency and effectiveness of organization.

Education and Experience

This position requires a post-secondary degree from an accredited college or university in public or business administration, political science, economics, finance, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred; and seven (7) years of administrative experience in a municipality as a CAO/City Manager, deputy CAO/City Manager, or in a related senior administrative capacity involving planning, management, and implementation.
