Chief of Police               


The Prince Albert Board of Police Commissioners is seeking a new Chief of Police for the Prince Albert Police Service.

Reporting to the PAP Board of Police Commissioners, the Chief will lead a staff of 92 officers and civilians. The new chief will be a decision maker, a strategic planner and a skilled manager of people. This will be someone who can quite naturally subscribe to the PAPS’ Core Values of:

The Chief of Police is responsible for the management, administration and operation of the Police Service, the maintenance of law and order in the municipality, and the maintenance of discipline within the Police Service.

The Chief has direct responsibility for the effective operation of PAPS. He or she has the ultimate responsibility for managing, administering and supervising all Police Service activities.

A well-organized and skilled people person, the Chief will oversee major operations and investigation, especially those of a sensitive nature. As the person who is ultimately responsible for hiring and firing as well as discipline … all of which affects morale, the new Chief will need to provide strong effective leadership for both executive officers and members of PAPS.


Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

The new Chief will come with extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of police administration and operations, not to mention expert knowledge of the criminal justice system.

The Chief needs to be someone experienced in finance able to handle budgeting and fiscal administration. He or she will bring an analytical perspective and be a skilled evaluator of the situation who understands Police Service programs and have the ability to bring the right recommendations.

Education and Experience:

Post-Secondary diploma or university degree or equivalent professional police training in human relations and management. Must have at least five (5) years of progressively responsible senior policing leadership and management experience with demonstrated accomplishments in business or process innovation. The successful candidate must reside within the boundaries of the City of Prince Albert for the full term of their contract of employment. Must hold a valid Canadian driver's license and be a Canadian Citizen and pass a security check.

Overall PAPS is looking for the ‘right’ Chief one who writes well and speaks well – combined with strong and effective leadership. The Chief of Police will play an integral role as a community leader in Prince Albert. Building confidence and trust in community safety while leading a dynamic policing operation that is facing increases in demands on the Service, increased policing costs, as well as the need to expand community partnerships.
