Job Description

By-law Compliance Officer - Waste 

Reporting to the Supervisor of Waste Management Programs, The incumbent will:

  • Investigate complaints regarding all aspects of the Region's Waste Management By-law
  • Conduct routine compliance checks and enforcement checks with resident's waste multi-residential service recipients, developers and collection contractors
  • Prepare legal documents, issue notices, lay charges and attend court as an expert witness as required in matters related to non-compliance to the Region's Waste Management By-law as it relates to the Provincial Offences Act
  • Investigate complaints relating to collection contractor operations
  • Promote and increase community awareness of Regional Waste Management By-law and Waste Management Programs
  • Assist in the maintenance of the waste management call centre database and history related to compliant tracking and inspection results
  • Participate in the planning and evaluation process related to waste management programs by providing input for reports, participating on committees and attending meetings 

The successful applicant will possess: 

  • A post-secondary diploma in law-enforcement or a waste related field with up to 2 years' experience in enforcement of municipal by-laws or other related legislation
  • Knowledge and understanding of legal processes, Ontario Provincial Offences Act, Ontario Waste Management Regulations and familiarity with the Region's Waste Collection Contracts
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and MS Outlook
  • Effective written and verbal communication and conflict resolution skills
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision
  • The ability to work shifts if required
  • A valid Ontario 'G' Drivers Licence 

CUPE 1764 Salary Grade 6 

This position is with Salary Grade 6 and will be paid at the following hourly rates:

 - Start: $36.77 - Six Month: $38.81 - Job: $40.85

Conditions of Employment  

Proof of education, qualifications and any other job bona fide requirements will be required prior to start date. A current Driver's Abstract will also be required.
