Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Officer will support the planning, development, and delivery of print, digital and multimedia communications that enhance public, stakeholder, and staff awareness of – and engagement in – County programs and services. The successful candidate will provide communications consultation and guidance to departmental staff on the planning of campaigns and projects, and develop communications products across a variety of media that support the achievement of organizational goals. You will support the media relations activities of the department, drafting media releases and key messaging, and monitoring related coverage, and ensure successful event management, contributing to promotions, logistics and on-site coordination. A creative strategist, you will enhance the County’s corporate social media presence through effective planning, design, storytelling, and ongoing monitoring, and deliver a professional response to public inquiries.

Qualifications & skills:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Journalism, Public Relations, Corporate Communications or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Several years of experience in a communication role, preferably in public service or government setting, with demonstrated ability to translate complex information to easy-to-understand content.
  • Strong writing and editorial abilities, with demonstrated experience writing for a variety of media (print, web, social).
  • Excellent strategic and creative skills, with proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite’s InDesign, Illustrator, & PhotoShop, as well as Microsoft Office. Experience with Premier Pro considered an asset.
  • Experience cultivating social media communities, curating and creating content to reach the organization’s target audience.
  • Experience with event planning and logistics.
  • Strong judgment, discretion and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to produce quality work in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment, with excellent project and time management skills, and the ability to balance and manage competing interests.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders and work effectively with all levels of staff.
